Federal/VA Benefit

To begin, Federal benefits managed by the VA entitled to beneficiaries are based on the veteran’s service. Beneficiaries would receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) detailing the entitlements of said benefit.

Instructions to on requesting your Federal VA Certificate of Eligibility: 

  1. Go to va.gov/education/how-to-apply/ 

  2. Scroll down and click the Apply for the specific education benefit you're intending to use, answer the questions and click Apply now. 

  3. On the next page you will be directed to sign in using your preferred method of login (DS Login, ID.me, etc.) to start your application. 

  4. Complete the selection process and submit your application! 

After completing the application process, it can take the VA up to 30 DAYS to process your digital application, please be sure to check the status online every 2-3 business days. 

 

To start using Federal/VA benefits at Texas Tech University:

  1. Navigate to TTU Student Business Services Knowledge Base - Military Benefits for additional information and frequently asked questions regarding military education benefits

  2. Students may submit applications, upload required documentation, and review the status of their military education benefits through the Military Benefit Application Portal. 

While it is not required, it is HIGHLY recommended that students enroll in a Military Payment Deferral plan.

Important Criteria

  • The Certificate of Eligibility (COE) must be addressed to the student, have their full name, type of benefit awarded and time remaining for use of said benefit. 

  • Chapter 33 COE MUST be addressed to the student and be dated within SIX months from the start of the semester. 

  • A full-page, uploaded screen shot of the entitled benefits, with the student’s full name, type of benefit awarded, and time remaining would suffice for us to verify your benefits. 

  • We encourage all students to formally request a mailed letter from the VA containing their benefits at least once a semester.

Important Notice: 

Effective November 10, 2025, Texas Tech University Student Business Services (SBS) manages all military education benefit applications, questions, and inquiries. This includes Federal and VA Education Benefits, Military Tuition Assistance (TA), and the Hazlewood Act Exemption. All related processes are completed through their office, located on the third floor of West Hall.

SBS staff have access to your application, supporting documentation, and account information and will be able to assist you further.
